The impact of sharing

Writer: Christina DargatzChristina Dargatz

Parents know how to tell kids to share, really well.

Having hosted the amount of families that we have, it’s definitely something we hear a lot. “Now, don’t forget to share!”

Being a ‘sharing boy’ or ‘sharing girl’ is just good old fashioned decency, and yes, kids need to be encouraged to do so regularly. Those reminders keep the inner selfish toddler-beast from fully taking over, and normalize the pauses us humans need, throughout life, for checks and balances.

But, when was the last time someone told YOU to share?

Are you a good sharing boy, dad? And moms, how would you rate your own generosity these days?!

Adults can often get as lost in selfishness as children, in fact, maybe we could use as many reminders from kids as they get from us.

Sharing is love in action.

We easily lose that meaning in the busyness of life these days. Sharing thoughts with a partner, sharing the mental space to listen to theirs, putting the phone down, turning off the TV, and sharing a real life moment with a family member —these are the new best ways to show those around us that they truly matter.

Amazing isn’t it!???

What was so normal just 17 years ago, (original iPhone release) has now become the ultimate gesture of selflessness. Sharing time and space with one another has never been such a significant act of rebellion against apathy and indifference. Material clutter and buzzing tech have, quite literally, been increasingly stealing invaluable moments from families across the globe. The best way to fight back, and rediscover our humanity, is to simply SHARE!

As we burrow deeper into this community this is a lesson and topic we are faced with daily. The lack of (material) resources in a society cultivates an appreciation difficult to find in the midst of abundance. And that appreciation makes sharing SO much easier.

At some point, we really do hope you each get to experience this crazy life we’ve found ourselves here in Guatemala. We want to share the good ol’ moments, new tastes and vibrancy of our neighbourhood with everyone that’s been interested enough to join our mailing list!

Finally, thank you for sharing your time with me to read some of my musings.
